The Dashing Dodger

Jackie Robinson’s far-flung media presence following his Most Valuable Player season in 1949 included a motion picture, expanded endorsements (cigarettes, bread, beer, and cereal), and numerous magazine covers. He was also the subject of board games, figurines, candy dispensers, and other mass-market memorabilia, undermining the belief of some major league officials that fans would not support integrated baseball. A series of six comic books issued in 1950 chronicled Robinson’s career but only lightly addressed the ongoing threats, harassment, and racial abuse he endured.
