Defending Our Rights

Signe Wilkinson aims at two targets in this cartoon—surveillance and easy access to guns. In her hard-hitting visual commentaries she demonstrates a talent for conveying messages with irony, deftness, and visual richness. Strong concerns in her work include the rights to privacy and freedom of expression. The first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning, Wilkinson began her career at the San Jose Mercury News, then moved to the Philadelphia Daily News.
