Daniel Hoffman was born in New York in 1923. He served as the 22nd Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress from 1973 to 1974. Hoffman is the author of nine books of poetry, including An Armada of Thirty Whales (1954), Broken Laws (1960), and Makes You Stop and Think: Sonnets (2005). His many awards and honors include the Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He was a Chancellor Emeritus of the Academy of American Poets, Poet in Residence at St. John the Divine, and the Felix E. Schelling Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania. Hoffman died in 2013.
