Ben Belitt was born in New York City in 1911. Over the course of his career as a poet and translator, he published eight books of poetry and 13 books of translations, including works from Pablo Neruda and Federico García Lorca. He was awarded an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, as well as fellowships from both the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Belitt taught for many decades at Bennington College and retired in North Bennington, where he died in 2003.
