Barbara Guest was born in Wilmington, North Carolina in 1920. She is the author of 18 poetry collections, including The Location of Things (1960); Fair Realism (1988), winner of the Lawrence Lipton Prize; and The Red Gaze (2005). She has also written three plays, a novel, and a biography of the poet H.D. Her honors include the Frost Medal for Lifetime Achievement from the Poetry Society of America, two America Awards for literature from the Contemporary Arts Council, and the San Francisco State University Poetry Award. From 1951-1959, she served as an editorial associate at ARTnews magazine. Guest died in 2006.
