Stephen Dobyns was born in Orange, New Jersey in 1941. He is the author of over ten poetry collections, including Concurring Beasts (1972), which was the 1972 Lamont Poetry Selection; Black Dog, Red Dog (1984), winner of the National Poetry Series; and Cemetery Nights (1987), winner of the Mellville Cane Award. His other honors include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation. Dobyns has taught at several universities and colleges, including the University of Iowa and Boston University. He lives in Rhode Island.
