Alan Dugan was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1923. He is the author of seven books of poetry; his first book, Poems (1961), was the winner of the Yale Younger Poets Prize, the National Book Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. He went on to win a second National Book Award for Poems Seven: New and Complete Poetry (2001) and received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. Dugan died in 2003.
