Stanley Burnshaw was born in New York City in 1906. He published nine books, including The Seamless Web (1970), The Refusers (1981), and Robert Frost Himself (1986). Also an accomplished translator, he compiled and edited The Poem Itself (1960), an anthology of poetry from Europe and South America that presented poems in their original languages aside an analytical essay and line-by-line literal translation. In 1971, he was the recipient of an award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Burnshaw died in 2005.
