Elisavietta Ritchie was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1932. She is the author of 17 poetry collections, including Tightening the Circle Over Eel Country (1974), Raking the Snow (1982), and Babushka’s Beads: New and Selected Poems (2016). She is also a photojournalist, writer of fiction and creative nonfiction, and translator of works in Russian, French, Malay, and Indonesian. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and National Geographic, among other publications. Ritchie is the founder of Wineberry Press and a co-founder of A Splendid Wake, an organization that works to preserve the works of poets in the Washington, D.C., Metro area. She currently resides on Broomes Island, Maryland.
