Adam Zagajewski was born in Lwów, Poland in 1945. He is the author of a number of poetry collections in Polish, as well as a memoir and several collections of prose. His poetry collections in English include Eternal Enemies: Poems (2008), Canvas (1991), and Mysticism for Beginners (1997). His honors include the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, the Kościelski Award, the Heinrich Mann Prize, the Griffin Poetry Prize, and a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation. The Ferdinand Schevill Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago, Zagajewski lives in both Poland and the United States.
