Jean Burden was born in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1914. She is the author of two collections of poetry, Naked as the Glass (1963) and Taking Light From Each Other (1992), as well as several books on animal welfare. Burden served as poetry editor of Yankee magazine for nearly 50 years. She received three fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, and became the poet laureate of Altadena, California, in 1976. In her honor, California State University began the Jean Burden Annual Poetry Series, an event that showcases renowned poets, in 1986. Burden lectured at Pasadena City College, University of California Irvine, and California State University. She died in 2008.
