Mary Kinzie was born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1944. She is the author of seven poetry collections, including The Threshold of the Year (1981), Autumn Eros and Other Poems (1991), and California Sorrow (2007). Her honors include a fellowship from the Guggenheim Foundation and an O. B Hardison Poetry Award from the Folger Shakespeare Library. Mary Kinzie currently teaches English and Creative Writing at Northwestern University.
