Heinz Czechowski was born in Dresden in 1935. He is the author of more than 20 collections of poetry and prose, including Nachmittag eines Liebespaares (1962) and Die Pole der Erinnerung (2006), and is noted for his translations and adaptations of work by authors such as Anna Akhmatova and Marina Tsvetaeva. Czechowski’s honors include the 1970 Goethe Prize of the City of Berlin (East Berlin), the 1984 Heinrich Mann Prize of the Academy of Arts of the GDR, and the 2001 Brothers Grimm Prize of the City of Hanau. He died in 2009.
