Brenda Hillman was born in Tucson, Arizona, in 1951. She is the author of 10 poetry collections, including Loose Sugar (1997), which was a finalist for the National Book Critic’s Circle Award, and Bright Existence (1993), which was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. She is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Academy of American Poets. Hillman holds the Olivia Filippi Chair in Poetry at St. Mary’s College in California.
