Michael Collier was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1953. He is the author of six poetry collections, including The Folded Heart (1989); The Ledge (2002); and, most recently, An Individual History (2012). His honors include a Literature Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, an Alice Fay di Castagnola Award from the Poetry Society of America, and the “Discovery”/ The Nation Award, as well as fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts. Collier served as the Poet Laureate of Maryland from 2001 to 2004 and is currently the director of the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. He is a professor of English at the University of Maryland.
